Team time is a big part of living in community on the Race. (Since squads are usually pretty big, it’s more effective to break into teams of 4-7 people.) Our time in Jordan has been very busy so we make team time a high priority. We have each chosen a day of the week and we are in charge of what the team does together that day. It can be simply hanging out or sharing what we are feeling or thinking, or we may watch movies, do art together, or study the Word.

For one of our team times this past week, a teammate took us to Isaiah 6:1-8.

Isaiah’s Vision of the Lord

1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory!”

4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah’s Commission from the Lord

8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

Then she had us take time individually to imagine if we were in Isaiah’s place. What would we think, say, or do if we suddenly found ourselves in the throne room of the Most High? Here is my reimagined Isaiah 6:1-8:

In the month I served in Jordan, I saw the Lord sitting on His throne in heaven. He was surrounded by glory like a cloud, radiating light and majesty. Angels were around Him, constantly singing praises, always in awe of a new facet of who He is. The throne room resonated with echoed praises. The worship of all creation filled the space like fragrant incense.

As my attention was drawn to Him who sits on the throne, my body went slack and I fell face down on the ground. My insufficiencies, sins, and lack of holiness were put in their true perspective when contrasted with the holiness, goodness, majesty, and power of the Ancient of Days.

At the very revelation of Who was before me, all words are gone. I am unworthy. I don’t deserve to see Him and live.

Then an angel came to me, assuring me that I am able to come into His presence because of Jesus. His sacrifice cleansed me so that I could stand before my Creator in all His splendor.

As tears streamed down my face, I rose to my feet and gazed upon Him who sits on the throne. The one who loves me. The one who saved me. The one who has given me new life. It all came into stark perspective. The gospel has taken on new meaning.

Then the voice of the Lord thundered through the throne room saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said without a thought, “Here I am! Send me.”

To tell the world of this treasure I’ve found, this gift I’ve been given? Of course my answer is YES.

In Matthew 28 the great commission is given to EVERYONE who believes. It’s not just for those who are called to other countries. We are all to go and make disciples at work, at home with kids, at school, as we go throughout our days. We need to be constantly in tune with the Holy Spirit so we are ready to share the good news at any moment, even in the checkout line at Walmart. Isaiah gave his yes before even knowing what God wanted him to do. That’s the yes that God wants from each of us. Not a conditional yes, but a yes of trust in the Lord, no matter what He will ask of us.

I encourage you to meditate on this passage as well. What would your response be if you stood face to face with the Living God in His throne room? (And you will meet him face to face one day.) What is He asking you to say yes to right now, and why haven’t you given Him that yes yet?
